Q&A: Is this an okay dragonquest 9 team?

Question by Brandon Fran: Is this an okay dragonquest 9 team?
Alright, so I really don’t pay attention to forums or strategy guides for games. But I’m starting to wonder if I picked a horrible team…
Minstrel-swords
Warrior-swords
Mage-knives
Martial Artist-fans
Their levels are around 26. I’m at the academy in the snowy mountain area about to get the 7th fygg. Now, I don’t know if minstrel is that useful, but since I don’t have a priest there’s healing spells and the spell that brings other members back to life. What do you think? Do I need to change anything and do some serious grinding? Or if I’ve made it this far, I’m okay?

The Dragon Quest series is amazing – especially DQ8 on PS2, because although I completed it, I am still trying to build character levels up. RPGs are pure escaspism from a dreary world, so lets not pay any attention to people who think they know how life should be lived.

I just bought DQ9 and my team is a similar layout. I’m not far from lvl 25 but haven’t encountered many problems so far. I think its important to have at least one character who can heal everyone though. If you just level up, you won’t need to resurrect anyone since you will be ahead of the game. I have a tendency to save a lot, which usually means running back and forth between town and dungeon but you also improve your levels that way. I prefer doing that then going in gung ho and getting killed and waking up in the church with no money.

that’s kind of a tough call…first of all, eventually, you definitely need a Priest or Sage (you get the Sage later). But if you haven’t been using a Priest at all, yes, you’re going need to do a lot of grinding. What I would suggest doing is to unlock the Sage class and learn the 2nd skill at 10 SP, which will allow you to change classes at will. Then, work on the Priest while you’re going through the story. When you encounter a boss, change back to whatever class you’re better at if the Priest is too weak at the time. Just keep going until the enemies get too strong, and then grind from there. I don’t recommend grinding right now because there are better ways to do that post-game, so it would be a waste of time to do it right now. And if you hate grinding, it’ll be worse for you.

of the classes you have, minstrel is the least useful, so I would change out of that class as soon as you can. Warrior and martial artist are decent, but Gladiator and Paladin are much better. For now, the Mage is okay.

Regarding which of your characters should change to what, that depends on if they’ve mastered a weapon or not. If you’ve mastered the sword, then that character can change to any class while being able to use the skills learned. If you haven’t mastered the sword, then you should try to change to a class that can use the sword or you won’t be able to use what you’ve learned. here are my recommendations based on the info you’ve provided:

minstrel: change to Gladiator/Priest.
Warrior: change to Priest/Gladiator.
Mage: ok not to change for now. change to sage after beating final boss
martial artist: change to Paladin, work on spear. in the end, fan and Paladin work very well, but you don’t need to worry about fan for now

if you want to keep things simple, just change the minstrel to priest. You should still be able to beat the final boss with that change alone. Then you can grind everyone else post-game.
